As we head into the fall season, we want to invite new contributors to help build the Active History Project! Activehistory.ca invites proposals for standalone blog posts, thematic blog series, and other contributions, all of which explore new research, innovative historical approaches, and history that matters today.
We welcome submissions from historians and scholars in related disciplines who engage with historical questions and would like to connect with the wider historical community in an accessible and easily digestible format. Whether you’re a graduate student, early-career scholar, or someone working outside of traditional academia, we encourage interdisciplinary perspectives and community-engaged research.
We are particularly interested in the following roles:
Contributing Editors
Are you an avid Activehistory.ca reader or someone who has contributed to the site before and wants to try your hand at editing? We encourage those interested in a six-month contributing editor position to apply. We are looking for potential editors who will bring fresh ideas, interdisciplinary perspectives, and diverse historical approaches to the project. Proposals for the contributing editor role should include a brief bio and a one-paragraph description of what potential themes, types of blog posts, or projects you would like to add to Activehistory.ca.
Series Editors
What histories matter the most in 2025? Work with fellow historians and scholars across disciplines alongside the Activehistory.ca editorial collective to present a long-form series of posts centered on a specific theme. Previous series have explored topics including refugee reception, the climate emergency, and the use of AI in the classroom. Proposals for the series editor role should include a short bio, a title for the proposed series, a one-paragraph statement of the theme and format of the series (blog series, digital humanities projects, artwork with commentary, etc.), and a list of potential contributors.
Regular Contributors
Share your work and ideas regularly with our audience of historians and history professionals, policymakers, journalists, and the broader public. Regular contributors commit to working with the editorial collective to publish four blog posts (typically accessible text of 700-1500 words) over the course of a year. We particularly welcome research that connects historical analysis with insights from other fields, applied history projects, and community-engaged scholarship. Proposals for the regular contributor role should include a short bio and a one-paragraph description of your research history along with potential themes or ideas for posts.
Honoraria
Thanks to the generosity of the site’s readers and allies across Canada, we are pleased to offer honoraria to early-career historians interested in taking on these roles. Series editors will receive $500 and a budget of up to $500 to pay series contributors (for example, four posts at $125 each) Regular contributors will receive $500 per year.
Ready to contribute? We look forward to hearing your ideas and welcoming new voices to the Active History Project! For more information visit our Guidelines for authors and then contact us at activehistoryinfo@gmail.com.
