Beyond The Lecture: Pandemic Edition

In January 2018 the Beyond the Lecture series launched with the goal of sharing blog posts focused on best practices for teaching Canadian history at the post-secondary level. Since 2018, Beyond The Lecture has highlighted innovative course design practices, the use of digital history, experiential learning, and new approaches to teaching Canadian history. The series has also created a community of dialogue and in April 2019 we released the Beyond the Lecture ebook which highlighted some of the most read posts from the series. 

Covid-19 has significantly impacted post-secondary education and the ways in which education is delivered. Given the impact the pandemic has had on instructional practices and the many ways educators have pivoted online we have decided to put out a call specifically connected to teaching during covid-19. 

We seek submissions on topics including, but not limited to: 

• Emergency remote teaching
• Online instruction
• Integrating primary sources in digital classrooms
• Revising syllabuses due to covid 
• Teaching while physical distancing
• Work-life balance 

As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that Active History represents the diversity of our community, we would also especially welcome papers by and from women, non-binary, Indigenous, POC, queer*, and other minority scholars and communities, as well as early-career, precariously employed, and emerging scholars.

Submissions can be in the form of a blog post between 600 to 1,500 words in length, but alternative formats (including videos, graphics, podcasts, and online exhibitions) are also welcomed. Posts should be written in accessible, engaging style and avoid the use of jargon.
